Non-motor Symptoms and Quality of Life in Mild Parkinson’s Disease

|
Non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) are common and affect negatively quality of life (QoL). However, few studies have conducted NMS and QoL in mild PD patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of NMS and relation between NMS and QoL in patients with mild PD. A population of 97 PD patients with Hoehn and Yahr 0-2 stage was studied; all agreed to be interviewed using structured questionnaires. Among 97 patients, 96 patients (99%) experienced NMS and 89 patients (91.8%) reported at least 2 domains concurrent non-motor symptom. The patients have an average 4.6±2.0 concurrent non-motor symptoms. Mood/cognition (79.4%) was the most prevalent symptom, followed by sleep/fatigue (74.2%), and miscellany (63.9%). The non-motor symptom score was negatively correlated with the Quality of Life (QoL). On stepwise multiple regression analysis, the most significant factors contributing to QoL scores were lower Schwab and England ADL, higher mood/cognition score, higher miscellaneous score, and higher attention/memory score, in that order. Mild PD patients have various NMS and NMS affect negatively QoL. Therefore, NMS should be carefully assessed and managed in mild PD patients
